American History??

I live in Ireland and for my leaving certificate examinations I have to write a 1000 word essay on a specific historical event occurring between 1801-1990. I'm fascinated by American history so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a topic (I researched The Kent State Shootings and The My Lai Macre but I concluded they weren't detailed enough and i needed more sources).
