Could this lead to a cheap quality control device for critical parts in space?

Interesting idea, but you don't want to do quality control in space. You want to get the project right on the ground before spending $10,000+ a pound in launch costs and putting a defective unit into an environment where fixing any problems is much harder, and sometimes impossible.
